Top Lockdown Reads

In the middle of these strange times I've found myself picking up books again. It's been a long time since I've read a book properly; but I set myself a goal this year to read one book a month. So far I've actually managed to exceed that, with a little help from the country being in lockdown! I've managed to read about one book a week so far.

So if you're like me and are looking for a bit of escapism by burying your head into someone else's world; here are some of my top recommendations:

The Gospel According to Drew Barrymore - Pippa Wright
Honestly; I was not convinced when I first spotted this book in a Waterstones; pre lockdown life. I ended up judging the book by the cover (which I thought was very cute looking) and that's how it ended up in my basket. But I actually really enjoyed it. A lovely story about grown up friendships and how you can drift apart and become consumed by your own life. All about what different relationships need to grow and with a good sprinkling of mystery in there too. Allows you to reflect on your own life and how you reach out to people in times of need.

The Places I've Cried In Public - Holly Bourne
This is absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful. Although it's more of a young adult book it has got a very mature storyline; but one that will resonate with women of all ages. All about a young girl navigating her mental health in response to a traumatic experience and how she finds ways to grow and heal from it. Beautifully written; forces you to confront your own experiences with dating and relationships.

A Good Girl's Guide To Murder - Holly Jackson
This again is more of a young adult book; the story is immediately engaging and the characters are relatable. This book is a crime mystery with one girl looking to prove a previously convicted murderer innocent; with the help of his brother. The story leaves you guessing the whole way through and puts the mystery at the forefront throughout. It was so gripping I managed to read it within two days.

The Flat Share - Beth O'Leary
I thought this book was going to be very light hearted and like a typical beach read. I was completely wrong. O'Leary does an incredible job of weaving a deeper story into what should be a gentle tale of love. You really delve into the characters lives as they go about sharing a flat together; the twist being it's a one bed with one living there during the day and the other at night. A great read with really emotionally intelligent writing.

Reading has been getting me through being stuck inside for the last month. Unfortunately as the start of my new job has been postponed; I've been constantly looking for ways to keep me distracted between looking for temporary work and, trying not to worry about the global situation. Reading has been the perfect escapism and something to keep me focussed on someone else's life rather than my own. Let me know if you've got any favourite books at the moment; I'm always looking for new recommendations!
